Water conservation and recycling at the Saint-Esprit plant


In an effort to minimize the impact that its Saint-Esprit pork slaughterhouse and cutting plant has on the environment, Olymel commissioned AXOR Experts-Conseils to design and implement an ambitious project to conserve and reuse water—a strategic and essential resource for the industry.
By adding an innovative membrane-type tertiary water treatment to its wastewater treatment system, Olymel now recycles water without compromising the quality of production or food safety saving 500,000 litres of drinking water per day which represents 30 percent of the total volume of water used by the plant.
At the 2016 Grands Prix du génie-conseil Québécois (Quebec Consulting Engineering Awards), Olymel and AXOR Experts Conseils won both the highly prestigious Visionary Award and the Leonard Award in the Industry category for the innovation, audacity, and proactivity manifested in this sustainable development project.
